Avast, me hearties!

The last days I`ve been diving for my Advanced Open Water certification. La Paz diving has some spectucalor diving. As late I have seen sea lions, manta rays, hammer sharks and a gigantic expanding fish! I have no idea what the name of the fish is, but it is my clear favourite. Small stupid kind of fishes that expand like a balloon when feeling threatened enough, showing spikes in all directions. However, they don´t really feel threatened by humans. If one can get close enough, it´s possible to catch the fish. By releasing it, so it will expand, and then catch it again, it´s possible to get great pictures (see example in cuba image gallery). If someone knows the name of the fish, please tell me.

Otherwise, a kitten bit me in the nose when I was petting it today. Mr. Cthulhu was laughing so hard that he forgot everything about his lost sombrero and wrestling mask. The rest of the time, he has been trying to get a tan. Himself, he thinks he has succeeded, but I think he looks as green as he always has. Tomorrow we will go on to Guerrera Negro then upwards to Tijuana and the US. Allready, the americans are everywhere (beware!).

Weirdness in Mexico

Mr. Cthulhu is pissed of. He lost both his sombrero and his new wrestling mask the same day upon leaving Mexico City. Exact how is still unknown, as he refuses to speak about it. And to make it worse I forgot to pick him up from the backpack so he had to spend 10 hours in the luggage compartment of a bus. I still can catch him glaring at me when I turn around.

Ok, a quick update on all weirdness in Mexico:

• In the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City there are the skull and skeletal remains on display of some dead saint. Will upload pictures later and try to find out which saint it is.
• In the pyramids of Teotihuacán outside Mexico City you can see where 100 of sacrifices were made. Some of the dead are displayed in the museum next to the pyramids. The bones have all been colored with some kind of pigments. Pictures will be up later.
• In the Convent of Carmen in the San Angel area in Mexico City, there are mummies on display. All are fully clothed in glass coffins, some standing up. They look really spooky, and you are likely to be alone in the crypt. Rest of Closter also beautiful. Sorry to say, no pictures allowed.
• Mexico City has got a Ripley´s Museum. A Mona Lisa painting made of more than 50 slices of toast. A vampire slaying kit, african fetishes, an 2 meter high eiffel tower made of toothpicks and lots more.
• Next to the Ripley´s museum there´s a was museum with a small horror dungeon at the bottom. Freddy Kreuger, Quasimodo and several others.
• Guanajuato has a real museum of some of the greatest mummies in the world. The worlds smalles mummy, a pregnant mummy, several children, all looking really horrible. Go early and you will be alone among them. Lots of pictures to be uploaded later!
• Durango has got extreme amounts of scorpion souvenirs. Most of them bad quality, but some really nice! Picture up later.

Cthulhu Goes Punk

Today, Mr. Cthulhu & I went to the Heavy Metal-market in Mexico City. The market is only on saturdays, and we were lucky to visit it in the early afternoon, because afterwards the rain started to pour down as if it would like to obliterate everything in existance. Mr. Cthulhu bought two T-shirts, one with Sex Pistols and one on Anarchy. To be true, he had wanted one on Chaos, but anarchy was close enough. Otherwise, I bought the complete albums of Judas Priest, Sex Pistols, The Exploited, Therion, Sham 69 and a collection of spanish punk. Will be great when I can listen to them, but that will have to wait for a year or so. Found the house of the Spanish Inquisition, but it seemed to be closed (didn't expect that).

Necronomicon Found in Mexico

Mr. Cthulhu & I read in lonely planet about the witch market in Mexico City. After some walking around, we managed to find it. Voodo dolls were everywhere, I bought a two-pack, and there were amulets a-plenty. When I was deciding between the sprays for luck, love or money (I selected a combo for all of them), I heard a great scream from Mr. Cthulhu. In one of the stands in the market, he had found a spanish translation of the Necronomicon. It wasn't clad in human skin, but otherwise looked quite authentic. As none of us knew spanish, we had to leave it there, but we are sure that some great cultist will soon find it and change the surface of Mexico forever.

Coca Cola Cowboys

This week I met a nice italian couple, of which the girl had read the new fake version of the Necronomicon. Now, Mr. Cthulhu has never been so upset as he was of the fake, apart from when a kid in Guatemala wanted to trade him for an egg warmer shaped as a hen, but as the couple was very sweet he didn´t feel any need to slay them.

Now, these nice italians were wondering why the Chamula people in San Juan were having a Coca Cola sign next to their church. Well, after some research I´ve found out that the Chamulan´s believe that burping expels the bad spirits. Coca Cola and Pepsi are, as it seems, better for burping than the local rum that was used before. On St. John's Saint's Day, the town consumes 100 000 cans of Coca Cola, more than three per person.

Otherwise, I´m now in the Chiapas capital of Tuxtla Guiterrez and tomorrow I will leave for Veracruz to search for hidden pirate treasure. Also, take a look at the updated pictures in the Mexico photo album.

Day of the Dead

Now in Mexico there`s been Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead. No Zombies, but plenty of happy skeletons. I will send up some pictures as soon as I find a faster internet connection. Coolest are the little mayan sugar skulls, named after dead relatives, that you are supposed to eat by candles, thus eating parts of their spirits! Mr. Cthulhu has preferred the more ordinary Halloween, also a big thing in Mexico, we had a good time shopping for his outfit. After that we went out and scared little children. And of course we got our own little altar to give respects to our ancestors (although I don`t think Mr. Cthulhu ate all his own). New report in swedish here. Happy Halloween all!

Cultists in Merida

In Merida, Mexico, I found the forst signs of widespread Cthulhu-worship. In a Tattoo-shop, this tattoo was on display of the mighty Cthulhu himself. Mr. Cthulhu was greatly pleased. Obviously the cultists are becoming brave, blatantly displaying their religion for the rest of the world. It might be that we don`t have to wait long for the time of the old old ones.
